Winfield, Texas is a small town in Titus County, Texas, United States. The population was 524 at the 2010 census.

The second largest town in Titus County, Winfield is located approximately half way between Mount Pleasant and Mount Vernon. Originally established through a partnership arrangement between the Union Pacific Railroad and one landowner, William Christian Barrett. Winfield was originally known as Barrett, Texas. Winfield's storied and colorful history includes (in addition to railroad operations) coal mining, brick and pottery mfg., and the famous Winfield Truck Stop.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9  square miles (2.4 km²), of which, 0.9  square miles (2.4 km²) of it is land and 1.06% is water.

Demographics

As of the census[1] of 2010, there were 524 people, 175 households, and 133 families residing in the city. The population density was 538.7 people per square mile (207.2/km²). There were 195 housing units at an average density of 209.7/sq mi (80.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 35.7% White, 00% African American, 0.28% Native American, 18.04% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 53.8% of the population.

There were 175 households out of which 39.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.0% were married couples living together, 9.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.95 and the average family size was 3.50.

In the city the population was spread out with 33.7% under the age of 18, 9.8% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 11.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 29 years. For every 100 females there were 89.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 84.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $31,114. About 16.7% of families and 18.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 31.7% of those under age 18 and 19.2% of those age 65 or over.

Education

The City of Winfield is served by the Winfield Independent School District. Because Winfield does not have a high school, students have the option to attend either Mount Pleasant, Chapel Hill, or Mount Vernon High Schools.
